About the »Antarctica« series

In 2019, Patrick Samuël’s adventurous spirit motivated him to embark on a two-month sailing expedition to Antarctica, South Georgia and other remoted islands on the three-masted »Bark Europa« built in 1911.

»In the footsteps of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton«

This is how Samuël describes this expedition. In fact, the ship followed a partial route of the Endurance expedition from 1914-1917 to the Weddell Sea, Elephant Island, South Georgia, where the explorer’s grave is located.

In contrast to Shackleton, the 2019 expedition started in Ushuaia. Sailors call the stormy seas between Cape Horn and Antarctica »The Drake«. The crossing was followed by the South Shetland Islands, Deception Island, Antarctica far into the Weddell Sea, Elephant Island and South Georgia (where a toast was made at Shackleton’s grave), then to Tristan da Cunha to the final destination of Cape Town.

This two-month expedition from Cape Horn to the Cape of Good Hope was breathtaking. Sailing over such a distance 100 years later with forty other crew members in a ship similar to Shackleton’s »Endurance« has left a deep mark on me.

What marks he means, are reflected in the paintings and photos of the Antarctica series.

ÜBER DIE »ANTARCTICA« SERIE

Patrick Samuëls Abenteuerlust motivierte ihn 2019 zu einer zweimonatigen Segelexpedition in die Antarktis, nach Südgeorgien und zu anderen entlegenen Inseln auf dem 1911 gebauten Dreimaster »Bark Europa«.

Mit diesen Worten beschreibt Samuël diese Expedition. In der Tat folgte das Schiff einer Teilroute der Endurance-Expedition von 1914-1917 bis zum Weddellmeer, Elephant Island, Südgeorgien, wo sich das Grab des Entdeckers befindet.

Im Gegensatz zu Shackleton startete die Expedition 2019 in Ushuaia. Segler nennen die stürmische See zwischen Kap Hoorn und der Antarktis »The Drake«. Es folgten die Süd-Shetland-Inseln, Deception Island, die Antarktis bis weit ins Weddellmeer, Elephant Island und Südgeorgien (wo an Shackletons Grab ein Toast ausgesprochen wurde), dann nach Tristan da Cunha zum Endziel Kapstadt.

Diese zweimonatige Expedition vom Kap Hoorn zum Kap der Guten Hoffnung war atemberaubend. 100 Jahre später mit vierzig anderen Besatzungsmitgliedern in einem Schiff, das Shackletons »Endurance« ähnelt, über eine solche Distanz zu segeln, hat tiefe Spuren in mir hinterlassen.

Welche Spuren er damit meint, spiegelt sich in den Gemälden und Fotos der Serie Antarctica wider.

À PROPOS DE LA SÉRIE « ANTARCTIQUE »

En 2019, l’esprit d’aventure de Patrick Samuël le pousse à se lancer dans une expédition à la voile de deux mois vers l’Antarctique, la Géorgie du Sud et d’autres îles éloignées sur le trois-mâts « Bark Europa » construit en 1911.

C’est ainsi que Samuël décrit cette expédition. En effet, le navire a suivi un itinéraire partiel de l’expédition Endurance de 1914-1917 jusqu’à la mer de Weddell, l’île de l’Éléphant, la Géorgie du Sud, où se trouve la tombe de l’explorateur.

Contrairement à Shackleton, l’expédition 2019 a débuté à Ushuaia. Les marins appellent « le Drake » la mer agitée entre le cap Horn et l’Antarctique. La traversée s’est poursuivie par les îles Shetland du Sud, l’île de la Déception, l’Antarctique loin dans la mer de Weddell, l’île de l’Éléphant et la Géorgie du Sud (où un toast a été porté sur la tombe de Shackleton), puis vers Tristan da Cunha jusqu’à la destination finale de Cape Town.

« Cette expédition de deux mois, du cap Horn au cap de Bonne-Espérance, a été époustouflante. Naviguer sur une telle distance 100 ans plus tard avec quarante autres membres d’équipage dans un navire similaire à l’« Endurance » de Shackleton m’a profondément marqué. »
